I have grown up and lived near water my entire life and I have witnessed the ocean’s power in all forms. It can bring the simplest beauty in the gift of a shell or the harshest danger from the pull of a rip tide.

The waves, currents, and tides of the sea are much the same as the ups, downs and precariousness of life itself. Just as the ocean can be a mix of tranquility and disturbance so can life be a mix of calm and duress.

The lessons of the sea, both good and bad, have followed me through my personal and professional life. And I have learned that I can often reflect on these and lead a more meaningful life of inner peace.

It is about accepting life’s balance of nature as reflected in the waters of the ocean. Facing challenges will always be a part of life, but I have learned from the sea how to face them with calm. As seaman and divers have discovered, many essential skills at sea run parallel to lessons for living a meaningful, peaceful life.

Below are three lessons I have learned that have allowed me to lead a life of tranquility:

Don’t Let the Waves Beat You Down

Sometimes body surfing can turn into an all-out knockdown fest from the ocean. Wave after wave seems to come quicker before you can catch a good one. And dodging, diving and coming up for air before the next one strikes can send you swimming for shore.

Challenges in life seem to come in waves and we can find our dexterity for handling tough situations waning. Your debit card is stolen. Your car breaks down. You get laid off. Wham! Wham! One after another. Sometimes your head reels from the constant impact. Face those waves head on just like a boat, or else you’ll capsize. If you procrastinate, whine, and complain about the hard situations in life, the waves of difficulties will roll you upside down. Be proactive when facing down a challenge. Be determined to solve your problems, or life will be determined to knock you down like a rogue wave.

Keep a positive attitude and good things will come your way. Lie on your back and float on those waves while they lull you to a peaceful sleep. Face trouble with determination and strength. At sea one must know which way they are heading and have the strength to get there. It is the same in life. And if you can stand tall with your head above the water, your body and mind will be at ease.

Go With the Flow of the Current

Don’t try to change what you cannot.

Don’t get down on yourself.

Don’t fight against the tide.

Keep a smile on your face.

Make the best of a situation.

Go to friend and family for support.

Many times in life we feel we need to struggle against things that are beyond our control. But if you get caught in an undertow, the best thing to do is let it take you where it will and then swim back to shore. It brings with it relaxation, rest, and an unworried state of mind. Remember in life:

Taking the path of least resistance can bring inner peace. Sometimes we push and strain for what we think we need or want. But it’s like fighting the tide when you aim in the wrong direction. Water flows and so must you.

Don’t Forget To Stop To Gather Some Smells

Take a hold on life and slow down! Put on that wetsuit and dive down into the coral reef to soak up the beautiful visions that nature has provided us. Take the time

for that walk on the beach and discover the wondrous shells the ocean has offered up for our delight.

It’s all about stopping and smelling the roses, of course. Life passes by quickly, like the flash of a jumping dolphin. I learned to appreciate the wonders of ocean life whenever I can. And I keep these visions in my mind for when I need them.

So many times in life, especially in this high-tech society, it’s hard to slow down and call a friend, or read a novel, or get a massage. But we need to do these things for ourselves and others we care about. We need to present our freshest, happiest selves to the world and we can only do this by soaking up the beauty of the world around us.

Enjoy the moment and gather ye shells while ye may for Old Time is still a-flying!

在我的个人生活与职业生涯中,大海教会我的东西很多,有好的也有坏的。而且我发现,如果自己能经常仔细思索这些教益,就会过上内心平静、更具意义的生活。

通过对海浪的思考,我学习接受生活的本质——平衡。生活中,人们总是需要面临各种各样的挑战,但是我从大海中学习到怎样才能平静地面对挑战。水手与驭海人都发现,许多从海洋中学到的经验在过把生活过得平静且充满意义这一过程中同样适用。

下面是我学到的过平静生活的三个经验。

不要被海浪击败

有时,冲浪会演变成全力以赴对抗大海的狂欢。在你扑捉到适宜海浪之前,浪潮一浪又一浪地涌向你,越来越快。在海浪把你冲到岸边之前,要注意躲闪、潜伏、抬头换气。

生活中的挑战似乎也是一波一波到来的,而且我们会发现自己处理棘手情况的能力正在减弱。你的借记卡丢了。你的车坏了。你被解雇了。哇!哇!一个接一个的打击。有时你被这应接不暇的打击折磨得晕头转向。面对挫折就好比迎着海浪前进的航船,一不小心就会倾覆。如果你犹豫不决、悲悲戚戚、牢骚满腹地抱怨生活的艰难,那么一浪又一浪的困境将会让你摔个底朝天。在面临挑战的时候,你要主动出击。你必须下定决心去解决自己的问题,否则生活将会像滔天的巨浪一样把你击倒。

保持积极的态度,好事自然就会发生。躺在海面上随波逐流,海浪的舒缓会使你安然入睡。我们要下定决心去面对困境。在海上,人们必须清楚地知道自己前进的方向,也要拥有指引自己到达目的地的力量。生活中也是如此。如果你能把高贵的头抬出水面,你的身体和心灵就会自在安逸。

随着水波,顺势而行

不要试着去改变力所不能及的。

要喜欢自己。

不要逆流而上。

保持微笑。

随遇而安。

向朋友或者家人寻求支持。

生活中,我们经常会感到需要对抗自己控制范围之外的事情。但是,如果你被困在退浪之中,最好的应对办法是让退浪把你带走,然后你再自己游回岸边。这样比较缓和、轻松,心情也不会那么紧张。在生活中要谨记:

阻力最小的路会带来内心的平静。有时,我们以为自己需要或者想要某样东西,于是就逼迫自己,让自己竭尽全力。但是,这就好比沿着错误的方向逆流而上。水顺势而行,你也应该如此。

不要忘记停下来寻找乐趣

把握生活,降低生活的速度。穿上潜水服,潜到珊瑚礁里去看看大自然的美景吧。留点时间,到海边散散步,去寻找一下大海带给我们那些美妙的贝壳吧。

我的意思是你要停下脚步,闻一闻玫瑰花的香气。生命短暂,时光流逝就如白驹过隙一般。我尽可能地享受海洋生命的奇妙。我时刻牢记这一想法以备不时之需。

在生活中,尤其是在这样一个高科技的社会里,人们很难有时间慢下脚步来打电话给一位朋友诉衷肠,阅读一本小说,或者好好做个按摩。但是,我们需要做这些事情,为了自己,也为了我们在乎的人。我们需要向世界展现出自己最清新、最愉快的一面,而只有通过汲取周围世界的美,我们才能做到这一点。
