My wife thinks I have gone crazy. I threw out all my clothes yesterday, well, almost all of them, I kept too pairs of shorts, a pair of jeans, formal pants, three collared shirts and a jersey. The rest I gave to a very thankful under privileged person. The clothes filled a large black rubbish bag. I then went and bought five good quality organic plain t-shirts (I live in Durban, we can wear t-shirts all year round:) this is my wardrobe for now, I will be editing it further as I see what I need or don’t need.
Why would I do this? It’s the first step in my simplicity experiments. Tackling your wardrobe is a good place to start simplifying your life. This is why I did it:
Branded clothing; not for me: I’ve never liked the idea of paying huge amounts of money to advertise someone else’s product. So I threw out all the branded clothes I own and have asked my family if they would like to buy me clothes, plain is better and cheaper!
Cheaper: I bought three plain organic t-shirts that cost me the same as if I bought one branded t-shirt! If you are the creative type, then you could always paint onto these plain T’s or do some other type of t-shirt decoration (screen print, tye-dye, patchwork etc…)
More space for living: My wardrobe is cleaner and not as cluttered now, with only the clothes that I need, it feels great!
Giving stuff away: It’s great to give your clothes away. If you haven’t worn something for 6-12 months, then give it away to someone who would benefit from them, in my country there are plenty of people that would.
