Taking a leaf out of Carlsberg’s advertising book, ITV are preparing for Euro 2012 with an advert that imagines England have enjoyed a sustained period of success since winning their only trophy in 1966.
We often criticise ITV for their major in-game bloopers (their latest gaffe came during the Champions League semi-final second leg between Bayern Munich & Real Madrid) but this new ad is a masterpiece and is sure to get fans of the Three Lions excited.
Titled “It’s good to dream,” we are treated to an alternative reality which sees England win trophy after trophy. After ’66, we see Bobby Moore in the bath with the 1968 European Championship and then win the 1974 World Cup – a competition they didn’t even qualify for.
It continues with other key decisions going England’s way, Diego Maradona’s hand of God spotted by the referee and Sol Campbell’s disallowed goal against Portugal being allowed.
Among the highlights are Andy Sinton receiving a knighthood for England’s Euro 92 success and Gareth Southgate scoring that penalty v Germany four years later.
After 11 World Cup trophies and numerous Euro successes who wouldn’t want to watch Roy Hodgson’s side this summer!
ITV’s “It’s good to dream” ad can be seen below.
