Sacramento police have arrested a woman for the murder of her six-week-old child. Ka Yang, 29, had claimed her baby’s death was caused by a seizure, but police now believe the baby died after being burned in a microwave oven.
On March 17, emergency crews responded to Yang’s home in the 600 block of Rood Avenue and found the 6-week-old baby girl dead.
The Sacramento Coroner determined Mirabele died from burns, but could not determine how she got them. The arrest warrant shows investigators were initially suspicious because there was no damage to the space heater. The baby’s clothes were not burned and her hair did not appear to be burned or singed although she suffered serious burns to her face. Police found a pacifier for Mirabele, inside the kitchen microwave.
After a three-month investigation that included consulting with several medical professionals, [ch]forensic[/ch]specialists, and government agencies, it was determined Mirabelle died as a result of being burned in a microwave oven.
“Even when people hear the story they don’t believe it,” said Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong. “The injuries aren’t seen that often. In fact, we couldn’t find three other cases in the nation that had injuries caused by a microwave.
Yang’s other three children have been ordered into the custody of her grandparents.
Yang is now facing multiple murder charges.
